So you’re considering a meal delivery service? And why not! It’s a perfectly valid option to ensure you’re eating healthier meals and saving time in the kitchen. But it’s not always easy to pick the right one.
How are you supposed to know what makes a healthy meal anyway, and whether these services offer options that are good for you?
Today I’m reviewing Chefs Plate, Canada’s first meal kit subscription service. But just
because something is the first does not always make it the best.
It’s essential to ensure you are getting good value for your money and that it will actually improve your health.
Let’s see if Chefs Plate has what it takes.
What are the advantages of a meal delivery service like Chefs Plate?
As a holistic health coach, I’m always looking for ways to simplify health for people. We live in a busy world full of demands, and it isn’t always easy to find the time to look after our well-being.
The food we eat is a significant factor in longevity, risk of disease, and overall life quality. It can also be incredibly time-consuming, not to mention costly.
Meal planning, grocery shopping, food prepping, cooking, not to mention educating ourselves on how to eat a healthy diet. These things can take up precious time that’s all too hard to come by.
And if you have kids, things can get even more complicated – keeping a growing body nourished can be challenging at the best of times. Ensuring they get all their nutrients in, eat enough but not too much, and find something they like? A mammoth task!
This is where a meal delivery service like Chefs Plate comes in.
Choose from a selection of recipes each week
With 24 mouthwatering recipes to choose from every week, Chefs Plate takes the guesswork out of meal planning. Browse their menu, select your recipes for the week, and voila! The ingredients will be on their way to you. This leads us to our next point.

The ingredients you need for the selected meals will be delivered fresh to your door and in just the right amount (because everyone hates waste). This removes the need to plan a trip to the grocery store, saving you hard-earned cash and that precious time.

No need for any haute cuisine skills to cook up some delicious grub. Chefs Plate’s recipes are easy to follow, without the complicated jargon, and they all take under 30 minutes to prepare.
Meals are portion-controlled
Meals are portioned out in advance, and you get sent only the right amount of ingredients, so you know you’re eating the right amount. Great for those who aren’t into calorie-counting but want to avoid under- or over-eating.
Healthy meals the whole family will love
Chefs Plate meals truly are mouthwatering – just take a peek a t their website if you don’t believe me.
If you’re a picky eater or struggle to get your kids to want to eat healthily, try out the Cajun-Spiced Halloumi Burgers, the Chili Lentil Burrito Bowls, or the Cheeseburger Flatbread Pizzas, and tell me you could turn that down. Yum!
What makes Chefs Plate healthy?
A big misconception I often see with clients is that to eat healthily means never being able to enjoy your food again. It’s synonymous with restriction.
You’ll have to eat leafy greens and superfoods and nothing else. But this is a myth! First of all, being healthy is all about balance. I live by the motto “everything in moderation.”
But Chefs Plate is also healthy because it uses a variety of wholesome and nutritious ingredients. Ever heard the saying “Variety is the spice of life”? Variety is also key to a healthy diet. But a variety of the right ingredients.
With Chefs Plate, you’ll be able to fill up on the three macronutrients that are essential to the good functioning of the human body:
- Protein – Whether animal protein or plant-based protein for those vegetarians among you, with Chefs Plate, you’re sure to get that oh-so-necessary protein in you each day.
- Carbohydrates – Our body’s fuel; without carbs, we couldn’t function. Don’t worry; with Chefs Plate, you’ll get your fill.
- Fats – Fat gets a bad wrap, but they’re an essential part of a healthy diet. But only if you eat the right kind! Look for omega 3, 6, and 9 and unsaturated fats. And guess what? You can check the nutritional value of each meal before ordering it, so you’ll know exactly how much protein, carbs, and fat you’re getting in each meal.
Is Chefs Plate Healthier than Takeaway?
The problem with takeaway meals? You don’t know what’s going into your meals. Not entirely, at least. I mean, sure, you know that there are green beans, coconut milk, rice, and probably some garlic in a Thai Green Curry.
But where do their ingredients come from? What oil do they use for cooking? Is their green curry paste made fresh or is it from a jar? And if it’s the latter, which preservatives are used to ensure the paste lasts? Do they store their fish sauce properly, so it doesn’t go rancid?
Now, as I said before, I believe in everything in moderation. I’m not saying never have a takeaway. I’m saying it’s not a good option to use on the regular.
With Chefs Plate, as I mentioned earlier, nutritional information is listed on the website, but not only that, you can find the exact list of ingredients for each meal too.
Hence, you always know exactly what you’re getting. And you’ll be the one adding each one to your pot, then your plate, so nothing sneaks under the radar.
Chefs Plate prioritizes local ingredients and works with local and national farmers for their meat and poultry. They also have vegetarian options for those trying to reduce their meat intake – especially red meat, which is best consumed… well, in moderation (are you beginning to see how much I like that word?).
Last but not least, the recipes are developed by an expert culinary team who have not only your tastebuds in mind but your health too.
How to Use Chefs Plate (Make it Work for You)
The fact is, we are all individuals, and we all have different needs. Some of you reading this might be single and just looking for a way to eat healthier. Others may need a quicker way to feed their family. Or perhaps you and your partner want to make a thing of staying in and cooking together more.
Whatever your reason for being interested in a meal delivery service, I truly believe it can work for everyone… if you know how to make it work for you.
That’s why I thought I’d take you through a little step-by-step on how to use Chefs Plate to cater to your needs.
Step 1: Establish your needs.
What do you want to get from using a meal delivery service such as Chefs Plate? Are you currently training for a sports event and looking to load up on protein? Or do you want to ensure a good balance of all the necessary nutrients going into your body? Maybe you want to improve your digestion and are emphasizing your dietary iron intake.
Whatever it is, once you know what you need, you can make sure you’re getting exactly that. Have a preliminary browse of the different meals on the website and start to identify which ones suit your current needs best. Make a note of these, and be sure to add them to your order each week.
Step 2 – Fill in your Taste Preferences.
Are there any ingredients you don’t like or are allergic to? Add these to your Taste Preferences to ensure you don’t get sent any meals with those ingredients. Please note that Chefs Plate doesn’t officially cater to any allergies and, as such, cannot guarantee there won’t be any cross-contamination won’t occur.
Step 3 – Choose your meals, or let Chefs Plate choose for you.
Chefs Plate will automatically do it if you forget or don’t have time to pick your meals for the week. That’s why it’s a good idea to fill out the Taste Preferences as soon as possible.
Personally, I love the option to let Chefs Plate choose because I like a surprise. Plus, some weeks saving that time selecting your meals can come in very handy.
Step 4 – Make the most of the options available.
In a rush? Choose one of their speedy meals for those days you don’t have time to hang around the kitchen for too long. Special day? Add dessert to your order. Hungry kids? Add a side or two.
Step 5 – Don’t forget to pause your plan.
If you’re going on holiday or you’ve been invited over for dinner next week, don’t forget to adjust your delivery for that week – or pause it entirely. You must do this by the Wednesday the week before.
What’s the Verdict on Chefs Plate?
Chefs Plate has a variety of options and, as such, can cater to a range of individuals and their varying needs. Chefs Plate can make even the fussiest eater a healthy one!
It’s excellent value for money, and I believe it will, in fact, save you money due to the time you’ll save (time is money!) but also the decrease in waste due to the ingredient portions being prepared and sent out in advance.
My verdict? Definitely give this convenient meal delivery service a go; my guess is you won’t regret it!
